If I'm not mistaking, WORD 95 and Older, actually had the password encrypted inside, and they was a lot of software that could get it for you, not, with WORD 97 and up, all software develop for retreiving password are brut force attack, meaning they try every letter and symbol combination until they find the right one. So if the password your trying to retreive is more that 6 caracter, I think we are talking about a day to try all combination.

Some site will actually ask you for the file, and once they crack it open for you, they will charge you a fee in exchange for the password.

Although, those program are not perfect, I tryied a brut force one on a Excel Workbook, I only had a password to open the workbook, after running the password brut force software, I ended it with a diferent password on each worksheet, and non in the workbook. The crut force software did provide me all the password, but the result was still confusing!
