hello dear users,

I'm planning a big site restyling and I am also thinking about installing a PHPNuke portal system, this would result in a completely new site, forum, download section etc.

It's also possible that this will not allow me to import all the users and posts of the current forum...and this will be a great loss for our community...

anyway we are far from this moment but I want to know what you think about, if you have suggestions on what you'd need or what you'd like to have in the site, if it should be focused in other programming languages and so on...please post here.

If somebody is willing to partecipate in this, if you have some knowledge in website design or php programming...your help is appreciated...

Wow that would be good news indeed!
However Andrea i think every possible measure should be taken to import users and their posts. It would seem a depressing loss for one to lose all their posts and all the valuable resources that are currently available.

I truly like the orgnisation of this Forum more than any other. The ranking is a good motivator keep this.
Have you set a date for this?
I will be sure to contribute with any ideas that may come up
Thanks

Ok,

I've tested the phpNuke portal system, it integrates the phpBB forum system, but it does not support post's attachments and there is no Download/Upload center addin for the portal system, so I won't go on with the site migration. Every other suggestion to add visibility and audience to the site is well appreciated.

I would like to have more visitors and give you more tools to share knowledgment and solve problems...

I'm waiting for your help...

If there is some feature that you'd like to have in the site I'll see if it is possible, and if I have the necessary php knowledge to do it...

hope to have your feedback soon...

Hi Andrea,
i heard that Apache has a good stuff.

take a look here:

http://www.apache.org/

I can help you with design and some ASP .NET .

For me a good stuff can be a post archive , i mean old and interesting post can be put in an archive with a research engine that help user to find quickly some answer.
Or we can create a MSDN like archive.

Bye

This one should be pretty simple:
I was thinking of adding something for new users. Suppose an new user wants an answer quick and probably wants an alternative to waiting for a reply they might want to find out the who's who of the forum. You could add a link (Leaders) that would give them everybody who is a Professor and onwards) this would give them an idea of who can help.

It might be good to also have in that list info about when they were last active to give the new user an idea of which one would be the most likely to respond ontime.

From here they can send a PM to the leader they have decided to get help from.

Don't know what anyone else thinks.

Whichever way, you will have my support.

Sorry Admin, I think I can't offer my help, because of my ignorance of PHP, so I only can offer you any ideas I'll have.

But I ask you PLEASE: don't loose anyone of us, and any previous post in the forum. It's an unestimable treasure, that adds to the other treasure that makes this forum the best in the web: the avaliability of good willing helper. I never didn't find so many people disposable to help, and so patient, neither in the most advanced-extra-skill-extreme VB sites (anyway, I don't think this spirit is in danger to be lost). So don't loose none of them, or none of their interview. Don't limit yourself to do the possible: just keep them all.
I hope to find help here again for many years.

In response to Fab's comment..
Although I agree that a "moderator-type" essence would be cool for quick-response to users (see my previous request for AndreaVB taking over some chat forums), I feel that there is a danger in elevating some PMs to a status whereby their advice is not spread out to the rest of the forum.
I have been guily of rendering a judgement (ie. solution) on a problem whereby not all of the facts have been given, and a relative "newbie" has noticed this and cornered the user into providing more facts which rendered my solution incorrect.
Just a thought,
Kieron

Quite right stickleprojects, I never considered the possibility of some people receiving more attention than others.

This might do some damage to the community feel that makes this forum my favourite on the internet.

Another thing I thought of:

If it is possible, it would be nice to have the text of an original PM sent in the replies we send to each other so it is easy for the recepient to tell what the reply is in connection with.

and another thins is to receive notification via email when we receive a PM. This is because I hardly go to the bottom of the homepage so get to notice undread messages after a while since I can get the links at the bottom of the page at the top as well. I only go to the bottom to login or to check who else is logged in.

I'll be back with more ideas soon

On the whole thing about responses.. what about a response to code-uploads? I would like to receive feedback on code I have uploaded and see fixes done to code that has been uploaded - so I can use them too ;)

Every download submitted to the site has already a discussion thread in the forum, if you look to a download you'll see that there is a "Support Topic" link where people can add their opinions and comments about the file...

at the moment I'm giving the site a little restyling and I'm trying to improve it for search engine ranking...If someone of you knows about another VB site offering a link section where other vb sites can be listed, please post here...I'll contact the webmaster for a link exchange... this will boost AndreaVB search engine positioning

Bye

Hi Andrea

I notice that on the forum there is no provision for a section that deals with reporting. With the number of reports Developers deal with per project, i think a section on this will help. Mainly focussing on Crystal reports, as well as other reporting tools that can help ease this process.

Thanks

thanks zimcoder,

as you suggested I've added a board related to Data Reporting tools. I've also moved some Crystal Report's topics inside the new board.

I'm also looking to code the email alert on new PMs... do you think it a useful feature?

many thanks

Hello Andrea

I often surf on several VB sites, and of course if I notice an 'Add your VB link here' page, I'll tell you.

I noticed many of them have a lot of forum sections, many more of yours. This will resul in more specific tips collections, but it brings the users to loose the focus on the topic. So I don't like much too many forum sections in a site. But in spite of this, I'm asking you to add another section, about OOP and VB classes. After VB5, VB classes have become a powerful tool to implement, but there is not enough stuff on how building, including and using them into projects. It's a limit that we VB developers suffer comparing with the C and Java ones: not be deep into OOP. Anyway, there aren't many other sites having a 'VB Classes' section

I also noticed in many sites a sometimes useful function: when making a search and opening a result page, at the bottom there are some links to 'related or similar topics'. The structure is always the same, so I guess it is a common scriptlet. Have a search on it.
Hope it helps.

Thanks AndreaVB

I have seen the reporting tools section. It will certainly be of great help. This is a very important section.

I certainly think the PM notifier idea is swell.
