Does anyone know the best brand of DVD writer, what is the best out there for heavy duty use

There are a few DVD writers that are better because they burn faster but mostly they all do the same job. If you're going to buy a DVD writer look into buying a dual layer one, they can burn just under double the amount of data on disk. 8.5GB on one disk!

Personally, I think pioneer is a good brand but I probably have no idea about it, you can buy a pioneer dvd writer for £58.

I have LG GSA-4120B (double layer) and so far no complains. I have a DVD player Pioneer 500M also and he had difficulties in reading CD's, but so far LG reads very well. He is also very silent.

Characteristics:
DVD: 12x DVD+R writing, 8x DVD-R writing, 4x DVD+RW/-RW writing, 5x DVD-RAM writing, 16x DVD-ROM reading

CD: 40x CD-R writing, 24x CD-RW writing, 40x reading
