You can write at what ever speed you want, it will not affect whether you can read it or not. The only time you may have to write at a slower speed is if a disk can only be written at a specific speed. (e.g. if you have an old 1X DVD-R disc you should only write to it at 1X) After a disk is burned the only limit to how fast or slow you can read it is the dvd/cd drive.

someone please correct me if I am wrong.

Correct. Every disk has technical specifications which tell you what speed we can use to write data on it. Usually, software that is used for burning data on it, reads this specifications, and doesnt allow you to write data on disk with speed that is not supported. If it is a "no name" disk, you should avoid burning data with maximum speed that it can support, cause often comes to some undesirable results, like totally unreadable disk for instance. However, with quality disks, there sould be no issues like this.

And finally, only those players that support reading speed that you burned your data with can read your CD/DVD.

but surely if you burned a cd at 52X you could then use any cdrom drive in the world to read that, say, data cd? I thought that once a cd was burned any drive could read it.

Yes, yes, no doubt. I was thinking of something else when I wrote this. I was trying to say that from my experience, some old readers (8x,16x) couldnt read data that was burned on higher speed (32x and above). But, they could read disk that is burnt on 16x, for example (I am speaking about CD's, not DVD's).

Also, one last thing: often blank CD's that have a burning speed on them, like 48X, can actually be burnt at 52X and will not damage it at all. I think that it must be a recomendation burning speed or something similar. I still have not figured this one out but it works fine.
