is there any way i can connect to a ftp server through vb and lets say open a database within it? i've heard about Winsock but im not sure how to work it. is this even possible?

Hi,
No, you cannot open a DB within FTP. If you create a client connection (ie. a "network folder") then you will be ok. Other than that, IMHO, you will need to manage both the network access and the security yourself.
