icon Registering ActiveX controls in Vista

I am sure I have had something like this answered before, but I can't find it!

I had VB5 (Enterprise edition) working fine under XP on my laptop, but unfortunately the motherboard died. As I can no longer get one with XP, I had to buy one with Vista (Home).

I have installed VB5 OK< but I cannot get it to register or recognise some (non-microsoft) OCX modules that I need. (Unable to register ..message).

Can you remind me what I need to do to fix this?

Also, I get a message that Vista does not support Window Help files. Is it possible to install the old help module to read them?

I cannot see the VB5 help at present- this seems a remarkable omission of backwards compatibility.

It might be, but there might not be XP drivers for the hardware. Unlikely, but I don't have time to play about uninstalling and reinstalling. My version of XP was pre-installed on a previous laptop, which unfortunately developed a motherboard fault. No master disks. The Hard drive is OK, but if I used it on a different laptop, all the device drivers would probably be different.

I had big problems when the disk in my SONY laptop died some years ago. I couldn't get the exact size hard disk any more, and the system restore disk was preset for that size. It dumped a hidden non-DOS partition where it thought the end of the drive was.

I now have my XP laptop restored to health! Problem seems to have been in the memory, not motherboard.

So back to my HELP question: How can I distribute the HELP with my VB5 program, (Using XP Windows HELP ) so that it works under VISTA? Can this be done?

By default Vista doesn't install WinHlp32.exe you have to download it seperately here.

Thats if your using Shell "WinHelp32.exe " & App.HelpFile, 1 to open your help file. Other than that you make your own help files and use the WinHelp API to access the help file.

Read my other post today on this subject.

As for registering any ocx/dll just use

Run: regsvr32 your.ocx

I've been programming with VB for 12 years. Started with VB4 16bit Pro, VB5 Pro, VB6 Pro/Enterprise and now VB3 Pro. But I'm no expert, I'm still learning.
